The benefits of recycling are many, yet according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), only 34.5 percent of what Americans discard gets recycled. What's more, many people who regularly recycle may be unaware that they're making mistakes. Are you recycling properly? Read on to learn what you may be doing wrong and how to become a recycling pro.

Mistake #1: Thinking something cannot be recycled

Many people toss things in the trash that can and should be recycled or upcycled. With a little bit of investigating, you can drop certain household item at recycling centers, arrange to have your items picked up, or donate them. Crayons, for example, can be donated to needy children, children's hospitals, or sent to the National Crayon Recycle Program. Mistake #2: Tossing bottle caps in the trash

Until recently, we were instructed to remove all bottle caps from bottles before recycling. Caps from common household products, such as soda and water bottles are often made from polypropylene plastic (marked by the number 5 on containers) and many recycling facilities didn't have the proper equipment to recycle them. Improved recycling technology now makes it possible to recycle entire bottles - caps and all. Some - not all - facilities throughout Connecticut accept bottle caps. Check with your local recycling facility for more information.

Mistake #3: Filling your recycling bin with dirty pizza boxes

The cardboard box your pizza comes in is recyclable - if it's clean. Boxes covered with oil stains and stuck-on cheese makes a mess of the recycling process. Unlike plastics and glass (which uses heat during the recycling process) cardboard uses water to break down the fibers into a pulp. The oils released during the process ends up ruining the quality of batch that's being made into new paper and cardboard. Before putting your favorite pizza takeout box in the recycle bin cut or trim greasy spots.

Mistake #4: Recycling plastic shopping bags

Sure they're made of plastic, but plastic shopping bags are notorious for getting caught in the automatic sorting machines at recycling facilities. Once thought to be utilitarian, plastic bags are damaging the environment and recycling facility equipment! What should you do with your plastic bags? Many grocery and retail stores have bins to collect plastic bags.

Mistake #5: Putting shredded paper in the recycling bin

According to the Connecticut Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP), shredded paper is just as bad for recycling equipment as plastic shopping bags. That's because those tiny shreds of paper can clog up the machines and get mixed in and tangled with other recyclables. DEEP suggest shredding documents only when absolutely necessary. If you have shredded paper to get rid of, consider turning it into compost. Since wood-based paper is biodegradable, it will mix in nicely with your compost pile.

Mistake #6: All plastics aren't created equal

The numbers on the bottom of your plastic containers represent the type of material used and are a guide as to whether or not you can toss them in your home recycling bin. The following is a list of the common types of plastic and whether or not they can be recycled:

Number 1: polyethylene terephthalate; containers made from this material include soda bottles, water bottles, and peanut butter containers. Plastics marked number 1 can be put in your curbside recycling bin.
Number 2: high density polyethylene; milk jugs, fruit juice bottles, and shampoo/conditioner bottles are usually made from this material. Number 2 plastics can be put in your curbside recycling bin.
Number 3: vinyl or PVC; containers made from this material include detergent bottles, window cleaner bottles, and vinyl siding. Number 3 plastics are not picked up as part of your curbside recycling.
Number 4: low density polyethylene; dry cleaning bags, shopping bags, and squeezable bottles are made from this material. Number 4 plastics are usually not recycled through at-home curbside pick-up. Some laundry bags and shopping bags can be returned to the original place of business.
Number 5: polypropylene; yogurt containers, ketchup bottles, and straws are made from polypropylene. These plastics are sometimes recycled; ask your local recycling center.
Number 6: polystyrene; egg cartons and disposable cups and plates are made from polystyrene. Not all curbside recycling accepts number 6 plastics; consult your local recycling facility.
Number 7: miscellaneous materials: sunglasses, DVDs, and 5-gallon water bottles are made from number 7 miscellaneous plastics. These plastics are usually not picked up as part of your curbside recycling.

Bicycle History - 1960 to the Present and Beyond

In a previous article the history of the bicycle was presented along with significant milestones from the 1800's until the 1950's. This article will go over the advancements and milestones that have occurred from the 1960's until the present along with what trends we may see in the future.

There were a few innovations in the 1960's that were major to the world of cycling. These innovations are present to this day.

In 1963, the U.S. company, Schwinn introduced the very popular Sting Ray model. Shortly after its introduction its radical design inspired a new breed of riders. Somewhat radical themselves, they began a craze that is now known as BMX.

In 1964, Japanese company Suntour improves upon the rear derailleur. The design is called a parallelogram derailleur. This is the design that is still present today.

In 1969, Suntour also introduced a new concept, Index Shifting. Due to a lack of interest in the market, Suntour abandoned the product. It would not be until several years later until we would see a successful version of Index Shifting considered the standard today.

The United States pretty much dominated the major innovations that happened throughout the 1970's. Technology advances were allowing manufacturers to introduce new materials that were lighter in weight.

In 1970, the movie On Any Sunday is released. It is a movie about motorcycle racing, in particular motorcross. In the beginning is a scene with kids riding the Schwinn Stingways on tracks imitating motorcross racing. Although the scene was very short, it was huge it what developed from it. By 1974 there was organized BMX racing events nationwide.

From 1974 to 1975 companies introduced frames that focused on being lightweight. Teledyne introduced the worlds fist mass produced Titanium bike. Trek amongst others introduces carbon fiber frames, and Gary Klein, Klein Bicycles, introduces a welded, heat treated aluminum frame. Several other companies were shifting to aluminum frames as well, including Canondale.

The1980's most significant bicycle innovation was when Specialized introduced the Stumpjumper in 1981. It was the world's first mass produced mountain bike.

Rock Shox became into prominent existence when they improved the mountain bike with the introduction of products creating a full suspension mountain bike in 1987.

Other significant releases in the 80's were LOOK's clipless pedal design and Shimano launching their SIS model index shifting.

From the 1990's until today there have been furthermore improvements on old designs, hydraulic disc brakes, 33 speed drive trains, electric derailleur's to name just a few.

And what does the future hold? Improving upon the already super efficiency of the drive train is one area of interest. Look for internal gearing coming soon. Called planetary gearing, what is unique is the all of the gears are enclosed within a hub. Also look for chainless bikes, using drive shafts and drive belts. You will see electronic shifting advance way beyond where it is now. Computers will be integrated into bikes doing functions you would expect such as speed, distance, and calories burned, but couple that with features such as finger print recognition for anti-theft.

A BBC Radio survey polled its listeners recently asking them what was their favorite item invented since the 1980's. Today you would think that computers or television or cars would be ranked the highest. None of them even captured 5% of the vote. Leading the list by a huge landslide with over 50% was, yes you guessed it, the bicycle.

Growing up with parents as eye doctors, I got to talk a lot about optometrists for show and tell and book reports. When I told people my parents were optometrists, the typical response was, "You mean eye doctors?" I would nod my head. "That's correct." "I don't really need to go that often right?", "My eyes are healthy.", "Will they have to touch my eyeballs?" or "My kid freaks out." All of these are legitimate questions and concerns. So I will break it all down and tell you what the eye doctor is all about.

So what does an eye doctor do? It centers around the medical science behind the eye exam. An eye doctor is an OD, or doctor of optometry or an eye specialist. OD's are doctors who are also referred to as eye specialist. The word optometry comes from the greek words optos and metria meaning, literally "vision measurement." And that is what the doctor does. Most doctors use sophisticated medical equipment to test our patients' eye health and vision. Optometrists, or eye specialists, are health care professionals concerned with eyes and related structures, as well as vision, visual systems, and vision information processing in humans.

Why is visiting an optometrist so important? Regular visits to eye doctors will detect any vision problem in its early stages which will make easy and successful treatment much more likely. Every doctor will give a thorough and professional eye exam every time.

There is a lot that goes on in the eye exam process. In summary, a professional will go over your medical history. This is a great time to mention any medical issues you are currently dealing with as well. The exam begins with an external examination. Visual acuity, pupil function, and eye movement tests are done. The visual field test checks the extent of a patient's peripheral vision. Lastly, refraction testing helps the eye doctor make prescriptions for correcting vision problems.

Getting your children's eye examined is imperative for many things in young development. Early eye exams are also important because children need the following basic visual skills for learning: near vision, distance vision, eye teaming (binocularity) skills, eye movement skills, focusing skills, peripheral awareness, eye/hand coordination. Eye specialists recommend that a child's first eye exam be around 5 or 6 years of age; or before they begin kindergarten unless a specific issue arises. By that age children are better behaved, able to take direction and understand why they are being examined. This lessens the probability of children having a difficult exam visit.

What is the ketogenic diet anyway?

You must be aware that the body uses sugar in the form of glycogen to function. The keto diet that is extremely restricted in sugar forces your body to use fat as fuel instead of sugar, since it does not get enough sugar. When the body does not get enough sugar for fuel, the liver is forced to turn the available fat into ketones that are used by the body as fuel - hence the term ketogenic.

This diet is a high fat diet with moderate amounts of protein. Depending on your carb intake the body reaches a state of ketosis in less than a week and stays there. As fat is used instead of sugar for fuel in the body, the weight loss is dramatic without any supposed restriction of calories.

The keto diet is such that it you should aim to get 60-75% of your daily calories from fat, 15-30% from protein and only 5-10% from carbohydrates. This usually means that you can eat only 20-50 grams of carbs in a day.

What can you eat on this diet?

The diet is a high fat diet that is somewhat similar to Atkins. However, there is greater emphasis on fats, usually 'good' fats. On the keto diet you can have

Full fat cheese
Eggs

Non-starchy vegetables

You can also get a whole range of snacks that are meant for keto followers. As you can see from this list, fruits are restricted. You can have low sugar fruits in a limited quantity (mostly berries), but will have to forego your favorite fruits as these are all sweet and/or starchy.

This diet includes no grains of any kind, starchy vegetables like potatoes (and all tubers), no sugar or sweets, no breads and cakes, no beans and lentils, no pasta, no pizza and burgers and very little alcohol. This also means no coffee with milk or tea with milk - in fact, no milk and ice-creams and milk based desserts.

Many of these have workarounds as you can get carbohydrate free pasta and pizza, you can have cauliflower rice and now there are even restaurants that cater to keto aficionados.

What are the benefits of the keto diet?

If you are wondering if this diet is safe, its proponents and those who have achieved their weight loss goals will certainly agree that it is safe. Among the benefits of the keto diet you can expect:

Blood pressure normalizes in high blood pressure patients

Are there any side-effects of this diet?

When you initially start the keto diet, you can suffer from what is known as keto flu. These symptoms may not occur in all people and usually start a few days after being on the diet, when your body is in a state of ketosis. Some of the side-effects are:

Cramps and tummy pain
Headache
Vomiting
Diarrhea and/or constipation
Muscle cramps
Dizziness and poor concentrations
Insomnia
Carbohydrate and sugar cravings
These may take up to a week to subside as your body get used to the new diet regime. You can also suffer from other problems when you start the keto diet - you may find that you have increased urination, so it is important to keep yourself well hydrated. You may also suffer from keto breath when your body reaches optimal ketosis and you can use a mouthwash or brush your teeth more frequently.

Usually the side effects are temporary and once your body acclimatizes to the new diet, these should disappear.

How safe is the keto diet?

Just like any other diet that restricts foods in specific categories, the keto diet is not without risks. As you are not supposed to eat many fruits and vegetables, beans and lentils and other foods, you can suffer from lack of many essential nutrients. In the long-term the keto diet can also cause many nutritional deficiencies since you cannot eat grains, many fruits and vegetables and miss out on fiber as also important vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and antioxidants among other things. You can suffer from gastrointestinal distress, lowered bone density (no dairy and other sources of calcium) and kidney and liver problems (the diet puts added stress on both the organs).

The biggest issue with this diet is poor patient compliance thanks to the carbohydrate restriction, so you have to be sure that you can live with your food choices. Ensure your choice of speaker has proven credentials, and don't assume that members of a related, professional body, are somehow qualified and suitable. Minimal experience as a speaker and the price of a membership fee are all that is required, in qualification, to becoming a member of some such organisations.

Being published on motivating techniques, through a reputable source, is a good indication of the expertise needed to work as a top motivation speaker. Use the method described in Tip 6 above to obtain a quick and easy result.

Ideally, watch videos of the speaker performing, and listen to the audience reaction to determine whether he or she has a rapport with the audience. Rapport and humour are essential ingredients in the 'motivation' cake. Few professional speakers work with only one agent or bureau. If there is no mention of exclusivity on promotional material you can assume there is not. This, in effect means, that if you come across a speaker of your choice, and he or she supplies contact details, this is an implied permission for you to contact him or her direct and independently negotiate a speaker fee. Your aim should be to obtain value for money.

10. Information Normally Required by a Professional Speaker.

If you are contacting a speaker direct, and you have researched him or her as advised, you will be confident in knowing you are speaking with the right person for the job.

This diet includes no grains of any kind, starchy vegetables like potatoes (and all tubers), no sugar or sweets, no breads and cakes, no beans and lentils, no pasta, no pizza and burgers and very little alcohol. This also means no coffee with milk or tea with milk - in fact, no milk and ice-creams and milk based desserts.

Many of these have workarounds as you can get carbohydrate free pasta and pizza, you can have cauliflower rice and now there are even restaurants that cater to keto aficionados.

What are the benefits of the keto diet?

If you are wondering if this diet is safe, its proponents and those who have achieved their weight loss goals will certainly agree that it is safe. Among the benefits of the keto diet you can expect:
