Commercial EPC - The Energy Performance Certificate For Commercial Buildings

Commercial EPC - The Energy Performance Certificate For Commercial Buildings

The energy performance certificate has become one of the most important things to consider when purchasing, renting or building property. In fact the 'EPC' as it seems to be more commonly known as has become a legal requirement.

There are several different kinds of EPC, including the residential EPC, display EPC and the commercial energy performance certificate.

For the purposes of this article, let's take a brief look at the commercial EPC and what it involves.

A commercial EPC is a legal requirement for whenever a property is built, sold or rented. It is very similar to its residential counterpart and will carry the same energy ratings graph as the domestic EPC.

The certificate is to display the energy efficiency of a building. It rates or grades properties from A to G, with an A grade meaning the building is at the highest energy efficiency. Buildings graded at G are obviously not fairing quite as well.

Along with each certificate there should also be a recommendation of what can be done to improve the buildings energy efficiency and a comparison in place with buildings of the same type. These recommendations will allow the relevant people to consider any investment that might be needed before they go ahead with a purchase.

With energy and environmental issues more in focus than ever and only likely to become more so, these EPCs are here to stay, so if you own or are planning to own a commercial building, it is in your best interests to be fully aware and have your commercial EPC in place.

If the property in question is a public building then its crucial to check if it falls into the category of building the requires a display energy performance certificate.

A commercial EPC should be compiled, completed and produced by accredited energy assessors. There are many of these assessors available and prices can vary substantially so it's certainly worth shopping around.
