Selling a Car to a Junkyard - How Much Can You Get?

If you want to sell your car to a junkyard, your goal should be to get a good price. Whether your car was damaged in an accident or is simply in a dilapidated condition because of many years of use, there are a number of things you can do to get the maximum price possible.

First of all, look for junk yards in your local directories. Identify the ones that are in your neighborhood or within drivable distance from your current location. Keep in mind the cost you would incur in driving to these locations and the reliability of the car's condition in being able to make these trips.

Call each of the target junk yards and describe your car briefly, including information such as the model and make, the condition of the body and the engine, and any major damage cause by an accident.

The dealer may have his own set of inquiries about your car. Try to answer all questions honestly and correctly, so that you get a realistic estimate.

You may get an offer over the phone from the junk yards that are serious buyers. If they want to examine the car, tell them that you will bring it over or tell them your location.

Once you have communicated will all the junk yards on your list, compare the offers and the costs. Keep in mind the variations, where one junkyard may want to inspect the car at its place of business, while another might make you a final offer over the phone. Include expenses such those for as a towing service if your car isn't drivable, or fuel expenses if you plan to drive, and exclude them if a junkyard offers free towing.

To prepare your car for the sale, take out your personal possessions and additional accessories that you don't wish to give away, such as a CD player, or speakers. Make sure that these accessories were clearly excluded from the deal. Also remember that the car could look better after a wash.

To deliver the car to the selected junkyard, you can either drive it tow it.
